Which number should your AI voice agent display on outbound calls? The rule that doubles answer rate

When your AI voice agent calls a customer back (T-24h confirmation, vaccination, overdue payment), the displayed number is the single biggest factor in answer rate. Wrong pick = 12% pick up. Right pick = 56%. Here are the 4 strategies and the selection grid.

Strategy 1 — the business's main number#

The agent displays the number your customers already know (the one on Google, your card, your site). Typical answer rate: 50-60%. Ideal because it's already saved by many regulars. Downside: possible cross-call (customer calls back while you're calling them).

Strategy 2 — a dedicated outbound number#

A second number reserved for the agent's outbound calls, geographically local (+44 20, +1 415, etc.). Answer rate: 30-40%. Avoids cross-calls. Lets you trace agent vs human callbacks precisely. Recommended for > 50 outbound/day.

Strategy 3 — short code#

A 4-5 digit number (e.g. 5050). Answer rate: 8-15%. Very low because short codes are perceived as commercial/spam by default. DO NOT use for booking confirmations. Acceptable only for clear opt-in notifications.

Strategy 4 — hidden / private number#

Number is hidden. Answer rate: < 5%. Disastrous. Signals to the caller that it's probably spam or telemarketing. NEVER use, even as a default. Check with your provider that this option is disabled.

The 1-question decision rule#

  • < 30 outbound/day → Strategy 1 (main number).
  • 30-200 outbound/day → Strategy 2 (dedicated geo-local number).
  • > 200/day AND clear customer opt-in → Strategy 3 (short code) OK.
  • Mixed volume with booking confirmations → always Strategy 1.
